So here it is, the most anoraky & anally retentive ski tuning guide on the planet! This guide is designed to be a fully comprehensive guide for DIY tuners wanting the ultimate performance out of their skis. The guide has been compiled from many sources, in particular from contributors to the Epicski, TGR & snowHeads websites, including ex & current World Cup tuners & my own extensive experience. I can’t acknowledge all the sources & to be honest I haven’t kept a record of where I obtained each gem of information. So please accept my apology for any plagiarism, after all imitation is the highest form of flattery.
What I can say is that I’ve not just blindly repeated some of the old ski tuning wives tales that abide but that I’ve tried & tested every method I’ve detailed not only to ensure that they actually work but that they are done in the correct sequence. Now some of you may have your own differing techniques & if they work for you then great, I’m not trying to teach you how to suck eggs - just call me when you’re in the market for a new stone or some wax!
So, do you really need to spend £700+ on every conceivable piece of tuning gear? No, of course not, although the truth is that a basic tuning kit with a set of vices is going to cost about £200-£250 depending on whether you buy a proper wax iron. This price includes wax for about 25-35 tunes so at a cost of between £15-£25 for a basic high street store’s repair, wax & edge ‘butchering’ job then the DIY tuning route is really a financial no-brainer for the regular skier who wants way better performance or for the multiple ski-owning family.
And do you really need to do every step in the guide in minute detail? No, of course not. Tuning a pair of my own skis can take anything from a few minutes end of day edge touch-up to a couple of hours for a ‘full monty’ post stone grind tune, depending upon what I want, how much time I have & whether I can be bothered or not. An edge tune, hot scrape clean & final wax will take the average DIY tuner under an hour, ideally with a break in the middle to allow the final wax coat to cool. A quick edge polish, wax & brush in less than half an hour is easily done.
What I’d recommend is that new DIY tuners read & review all the elements in the guide to then enable them to select the tools & methodology required that suits their time, performance requirements & budget etc. Please feel free to call or email me with any queries re tools or techniques etc.
